Adult Learning Tactics Increase Training Success |
Engaging adult learners underscores the DTS way of learning and development. Discovery Training lead instructor and Director of Learning, Christine Mansfield explains, "I initiated a new style 14 years ago, removing 'full day classes' and long lectures from the repository. As she read glowing evaluations from the last class, she added, "I introduced micro lab class concept combines the employee's real life experience with a combination interactive experience."

Mansfield added her implementation also of the 4Mat learning style framework to baseline each class' goals. Address the meaning of the course material to the students, and why this is needed. Validate facts and concepts, reinforcing the "what" to the students. through lectures, videos, webinars, etc. Then students practice skills, role play and demonstrations in a critical 'doing' stage. And finally, each course includes an interactive application session, identifying how to apply skills and content on the job.
Every class includes:
- Pre class assessment and goal setting
- Customized curriculum, exercises and post course hand-out
- Interactive, hands-on practice with lecture, web and audio/video supplements
- Evaluation and post training assessment
The results show a 95+% - 100% satisfaction rate for classes, achieving higher employee recall rates and effective retention of material and skills after the class. Refresher podcasting, mobile app flashcards, and learning management modules complement Mansfield's best practices to maintain the learning effectiveness. "Understanding the adult learner is critical to our success," Mansfield concluded.
